Our First Campervan Adventure – Manningtree Magic, Witches & Rainbows
We finally picked up our campervan and set off on our very first trip. Just one night away, but it felt like the start of something big – our little home on wheels, ready to take us anywhere.
We decided on Manningtree for our maiden voyage – a charming riverside town with a fascinating (and slightly spooky) history. As we wandered its narrow streets, we couldn’t help but think of the infamous Witchfinder General, Matthew Hopkins, who once prowled these parts. The tales of the Misterly Witches still linger in the air – two local women accused of witchcraft in the 1600s, said to have been seen gathering herbs by moonlight and whispering charms to the tide. Whether they were healers, wise women, or simply victims of fear and superstition, their story adds a shiver to Manningtree’s beauty. We even found the old hanging tree – gnarled and twisted, standing as a silent witness to centuries past.
The walls and the sweeping estuary views were breathtaking. The water shimmered in the late evening light, and the marshes stretched out like a painting. But Manningtree wasn’t just about history that day – it was alive with colour and joy thanks to the LGBTQ+ festival in full swing. Rainbow flags fluttered, music filled the streets, and the highlight? A fabulous singing drag queen who had the whole crowd laughing, clapping, and dancing along.
As evening fell, we drove a short way to Brantham for our overnight stop at The Bull Inn – a cosy pub with a reputation for being haunted. Whether it was the creaky floorboards or the whisper of the wind, there was definitely an eerie charm about the place.
The next morning, we explored the nearby shoreline, where the mist rolled in around the mysterious Mistley towers and an old factory right on the seafront. It felt like stepping into a ghost story – the kind where you half expect to see a shadowy figure in the fog.
One night, one trip, and we were hooked. Our campervan already feels like part of the family, and if our first adventure is anything to go by, there are many more magical, mysterious, and marvellously colourful journeys ahead.

Our Second Motorhome Adventure – Cliffs, Seals & Pies in Yorkshire
After the magic of our first campervan trip, we were itching to get back on the road. This time, we pointed our trusty motorhome north and headed for Flamborough Head – and wow, did it deliver!
The moment we arrived, we were greeted by breath taking views: turquoise waters shimmering in the sunlight, dramatic white chalk cliffs rising from the sea, and the sound of waves echoing in the coves below. Down in the shallows, we spotted seal pups bobbing and playing in the water – their little heads popping up like curious swimmers. It felt like nature’s own theatre.
Sadly, the famous puffins hadn’t arrived yet , but the village made up for it with its quirky charm – including life-sized characters made from flower pots, one of which was modelled on Hagrid from Harry Potter.
A Little History
Flamborough Head has been a landmark for centuries. Its chalk cliffs were formed over 70 million years ago, and the headland has seen everything from Viking raids to smugglers’ hideouts. The old lighthouse, built in 1674, is one of the earliest in England, guiding ships through the often-treacherous North Sea waters.
Pies, Glorious Pies
We stayed at The Piebald Inn in Hunmanby – and if you love pies, this place is heaven. Their menu is a pie-lover’s dream, with 52 pies on the menu there is everything from classic steak and ale to inventive vegetarian creations. Let’s just say we didn’t leave hungry!
Beach Biking & Sea Dips
From Hunmanby, we hopped on our bikes and pedalled into Filey. The ride along the beach was pure joy – salty air, wide golden sands, and the sound of gulls overhead. We even braved a quick dip in the sea. It was refreshing (translation: freezing!) but totally worth it.
A Peaceful Finish at Hornsea
On our way home, we stopped at Hornsea Mere, Yorkshire’s largest freshwater lake. It’s a haven for birdlife and a perfect spot to just sit, breathe, and watch the ripples dance across the water.
One weekend, three towns, countless memories. From the wild beauty of Flamborough’s cliffs to the comfort of a warm pie in Hunmanby, this trip reminded us why we bought the motorhome in the first place – freedom, fun, and finding magic in every mile.
