Our adventures with Peggy

There’s something special about setting off in Peggy, our trusty motorhome, with no rush and plenty of curiosity. This time, our journey took us into the heart of Nottinghamshire, starting in the welcoming waterside town of Beeston and winding through pubs, history, and a few unexpected finds.

Some trips sparkle from the very start — and this one quite literally did. With Peggy packed and ready, we headed north-east for a journey that mixed windswept beaches, grand cathedrals, bustling city streets, and a few wonderfully quirky encounters along the way.

Our latest overnight stop in Peggy took us to the beautiful cathedral city of Ely, where a sunny Saturday rolled effortlessly into a relaxed Sunday by the river. It was one of those simple, unhurried trips where the place itself does most of the work—sunshine, water, history and just enough going on to keep you wandering a little longer than planned.

Some journeys in Peggy feel like travelling through layers of time. This one through Essex was exactly that—Roman stonework, eerie folklore, riverside villages, and unexpected flashes of modern celebration all woven together in a single route that felt both historical and strangely alive.

Some trips in Peggy are all about big distances and dramatic landscapes. Others are about smaller journeys packed with unforgettable moments—coastal rides, freezing swims, wildlife encounters, and the simple pleasure of finding a good place to park up by the sea. Our loop around Flamborough, Filey, Hornsea, Hunmanby and the Humber Bridge had all of that and more.

There’s something magical about packing up our trusty motorhome Peggy, turning the key, and letting the road decide the pace. This time, our wheels rolled us through a string of gems in Derbyshire and beyond — from medieval castles to windswept moors, from stargazing monuments to the quirkiest pub you could imagine.

There are some trips where every stop seems carefully planned and everything falls neatly into place. Then there are the adventures in Peggy, where the unexpected becomes the highlight of the day and where getting slightly lost is all part of the fun.

Every trip in Peggy seems to combine history, unexpected discoveries and a healthy dose of nostalgia, but our journey to Cambridge had something extra special about it.

From Shakespeare’s birthplace to honey-coloured stone villages and a few unexpected surprises along the way, it was a trip full of character, charm and plenty of wandering.

As often happens, we ended up with a mix of coastline, countryside history and one very elegant stately home right on our doorstep.

Some places capture your imagination long before you ever visit them. For years, Dungeness had been one of those places for me. There was something about its isolated landscape, quirky buildings, artistic connections and windswept reputation that made it feel completely different from anywhere else in Britain. This trip was finally our chance to see it for ourselves.

Some trips leave you with a long list of famous attractions you've visited. Others leave you with memorable moments, unexpected discoveries and stories you'll still be laughing about years later. Our adventure through Chester, Wrexham and Ledbury managed to provide all three.

Some adventures are carefully planned. Others seem to create their own stories as you go along. This trip through the Welsh borders and into Wales itself certainly fell into the second category, combining beautiful scenery, engineering marvels, unexpected kindness and one very real possibility that we might return home with an extra four-legged passenger.
