Adventures with Peggy: One Year plus of Motorhome Memories
In June 2025, my fiancé Arnie and I bought our Roller Team Pegasus motorhome, affectionately known as Peggy, and our weekends have never been the same since. Living in Spalding, we're perfectly placed to explore every corner of the UK, and since bringing Peggy home, we've escaped on adventures almost every other weekend.
From peaceful local getaways to epic journeys further afield, Peggy has become our home on wheels, taking us to some truly unforgettable places. We've enjoyed the ghostly quiet beaches of Hunstanton during the off-season, watched the sunset over a beautiful summer evening in Ely, hunted for sea glass along the shores of Seaham, and explored the vibrant streets of Newcastle on our Harley-Davidson LiveWire. We've stood in awe of the breath taking beauty of Derwent Water in the Lake District and admired the stunning railway viaduct that towers over Knaresborough.
Of course, not every adventure has gone entirely to plan.
The Legend of Arnie (and the Colchester Scaffolding)
Arnie handles our 7-metre A-Class motorhome like an absolute professional. Whether it's threading Peggy through impossibly narrow lanes in Wales or performing a seemingly impossible three-point turn, he somehow makes it look easy.
However, even experts occasionally meet their match.
In Colchester, a piece of scaffolding decided to pick a fight with our wing mirror. There was a loud crunch, the mirror casing flew off, and my heart nearly stopped. Thankfully, the casing clipped straight back on and Peggy escaped without a scratch. My blood pressure, however, took a little longer to recover.
The Waze War
Waze is both brilliant and terrifying. The reporting function is fantastic, although I may have become slightly obsessed with reporting every pothole on Britain's roads. The problem is that Waze appears to have absolutely no understanding of low bridges, weight restrictions or narrow crossings.
We've learned to be prepared for sudden reroutes, emergency manoeuvres and unexpected three-point turns at a moment's notice. The narrow bridge approaching the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct remains one of the most heart-stopping moments of our travels.
Everyday Heroes
Arnie's driving heroics aren't limited to Peggy.
One rainy evening in the Staffordshire Peaks, we came across a woman whose car had left the road. Armed with the Harley-Davidson LiveWire ratchet strap, Arnie successfully towed the vehicle back to safety. It's probably not listed in the our owner's handbook, but it worked perfectly.
We've also found ourselves helping a young girl walking home alone after Chester Race Day and lending a hand whenever fellow travellers needed assistance. One thing we've learned is that the motorhome community is full of genuinely kind people.
Scaling Mountains for a Stitch
When Arnie's Alpinestars airbag jacket needed servicing near Oswestry, what should have been a simple journey turned into a memorable adventure.
The satnav's "shortcut" quickly became a 15-mile mountain track. Peggy tackled every climb without complaint, eventually delivering us to a farm where we met one of the company's owners, her children, and a whole collection of friendly dogs. As a dog lover, I was in heaven.
For a brief moment, it looked as though we might be leaving with a puppy and an extra child. Thankfully, common sense prevailed.
The LiveWire: Our Secret Weapon
One of the best purchases we've made alongside Peggy is our Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric motorbike.
The bike fits perfectly into Peggy's huge garage and has become our ultimate exploration vehicle. Once we've parked up, we unload the LiveWire and discover places that even Peggy can't squeeze into. It's allowed us to explore city centres, coastal roads and hidden villages while keeping the motorhome safely parked.
Our Newcastle adventure was a perfect example, giving us the freedom to enjoy the city without worrying about navigating a 7-metre motorhome through busy streets.
Coastal Adventures and Hidden Gems
Our travels have taken us to some incredible locations around the UK.
We've cycled along the coast at Filey, listened to the famous "Singing Dustmen" wake-up call in Cleethorpes, watched dramatic storms roll across the sea at Hornsea, and enjoyed peaceful overnight stops beneath moonlit skies.
We've explored the beautiful skies of Aldeburgh with oysters in hand, swum in the sea at Filey, admired the Reculver Towers and the spectacular cliffs of Flamborough Head, wandered the eerie landscape of Dungeness, and stepped back in time amongst the timber-framed buildings of Lavenham.
Some of our favourite discoveries include the hidden waterfall at Ombersley, the moss-covered chasm of Lud's Church, the historic streets of Manningtree, and the beautiful lakes and mountain scenery surrounding Derwent Water.
The Food Stops Worth Travelling For
No motorhome adventure would be complete without great food.
Some highlights include:
- The legendary Piebald Inn in Hunmanby with its famous selection of 52 pies.
- Fresh oysters in Aldeburgh and Whitstable.
- Eric's Fish & Chips in Thornham and their unforgettable deep-fried jam sandwiches.
- Countless seaside cafés, village bakeries and pub lunches discovered purely by chance
Flooded Roads and Tight Squeezes
Not every destination welcomes a motorhome.
The flooded roads around Moreton-in-Marsh tested both Peggy and Arnie's nerves, while Bibury was so busy we couldn't even stop. Staithes proved equally challenging, with virtually nowhere suitable to park.
Thankfully, places like Saltburn-by-the-Sea more than make up for it, offering fantastic motorhome facilities right beside the water.
Highs, Lows and Looking Ahead
There have been highs and lows along the way. An unexpected trip to A&E in Beverley after Arnie broke his thumb certainly wasn't part of the plan, but it didn't stop us getting back on the road.
From lightning storms over distant power stations to peaceful mornings beside Rudyard Lake, from sea glass hunting in Seaham to watching the sun set over Ely, every trip has added another chapter to Peggy's story.
What started as a motorhome purchase has become a lifestyle, a collection of memories, and countless adventures shared together.
Here's to many more miles, many more weekends away, and hopefully keeping the wing mirrors intact.
